So, you’re thinking about volunteering abroad? I’m glad you’re here! You will no doubt have your own reasons for being here, and your own story of how you fell upon our stunning website. But if you’re reading this blog post, I get the feeling that you still need convincing as to why you should volunteer abroad? Let me help you out with that mind-tangle you’ve got there. Here are our top three reasons of why YOU should volunteer abroad!
#1. To get out of a rut
Is life feeling a wee bit flat at the
moment? Working a dismal 9-5 job? Uni getting you down? Just graduated high school and not sure what to do next? Or just generally suffering from serious wanderlust? Volunteering is a sure-fire way to get you out of those blah-feelings, blow your mind with a vibrant new culture and make friends from across the globe! Gah, it’s making me wanna hop on a plane right now just thinking about it! You’ll also come back having honed a bunch of new skills for your CV (also known as a Résumé), to help you with your career when you get home, which is always a plus.
#2. Open your mind
Speaking of blowing your mind, let’s face it. We can all fall into a pit of feeling like the-world-is-as-big-as-my-backyard sometimes. Going to a foreign country and seeing how others live can be eye-opening. In fact, many volunteers are stunned at first, when they realize that millions of people don’t even enjoy the most basic essentials in life. According to water.org, 663 MILLION people lack access to safe drinking water. That’s over double the population of the United States! Volunteering is good in that it really reminds you of what truly matters in life, and helps you to better understand and identify with a range of people different to yourself.
After all, one of the most damaging things on our planet is the inability to accept people who look, behave, dress, and speak differently than we do. Wars have been fought and millions have died because some felt it necessary to exterminate those who were different than themselves. Volunteering abroad makes you realize that people across the world, regardless of our differences, have the same hopes and dreams as each other: to be safe, healthy, loved, and free.
#3. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: Give Back
Here at Bamboo, we didn’t just trademark “Give-Back-Packing” for fun! We are passionate about making our travel meaningful. Volunteering allows you to share your skills and enthusiasm in a way that is super beneficial to others. Whether you’re teaching English in Ethiopia, caring for cute children in Costa Rica or bathing elephants in Thailand, you’re helping local communities to get out of poverty. Put that on your CV!
Well, there you have it: Three reasons. 🙂 But if you speak to someone who has volunteered before, you’ll quickly realize that this is just the tip of the iceberg. Volunteers come home bubbling with excitement, epic stories, and with massive smiles on their faces. They might come home a little tired (or a lot tired!) and dirty, but they’re better human beings for the experience. Their lives are changed forever.
As one of our volunteers said: “Once you see the smile on someone’s face when you bring them new clothes, food, or drinking water, you’ll never forget it. I still hear the voice of this one sweet older woman who smiled and said a very humble ‘Thanks’ as we handed out our gifts in this village in Uganda.”
