Uganda is a country that will cast a spell over you the moment you arrive.

It is home to some of the world's most beautiful natural splendours, to people with beautiful smiles, warm welcomes and graceful dance. It is now the latest addition to Bamboo's collection of Give-Back adventure tours.

Everyday is packed with awesomeness, but some of our highlights are:

Learn how to cook some local recipes you won't find in any cooking books
Dance with the local women (or play football with their kids if you have no sense of rhythm like me)
Visit a primary school located in a rainforest
Go shopping on Jinjas famous craft street market
Zipline through the rainforest
Safaris by car and by foot with so many animals to see that there just isn't enough space here to list them all
Including lions that can climb up trees!

Gorilla Bolt-On

Don't stop reading yet... we have one more amazing thing to offer you: GORILLAS!! And not just any kind of gorilla but the super rare mountain gorillas which can only be found in the Virunga Mountains and the Impenetrable Forest of Uganda.

Our 5-day bolt-on to the main trip gives you the chance to see these beautiful apes, making a once-in-a-lifetime experience all the more magical. You will be guided by the Batwa pygmies who have lived in this rainforest since the beginning of humanity until they were evicted from their homelands when the rainforest was declared a national park and off-limits for human settlements. The guides will tell you about their lives before when they lived in harmony with the rainforest and the gorillas plus stories of their ancestors which have been passed down for generations and can't be found in any guidebook.

And if all this isn't amazing enough, you'll go down to Lake Bunyonyi to explore its 29 islands!

Interested? Of course you are! Message us on Facebook or via [email protected] and we will supply you with a detailed travel hack and pricing :)

A typical scene

This is it; the moment that you’ve been waiting for. Your plane is finally descending into Uganda! You will be met at Entebbe International Airport with a warm welcome by our one of our amazing team and driver, after which we will whisk you off on the 3-hour journey to Mukono Town before we get you checked into your hotel.

At last, you can rest up, relax and calm those excited butterflies in your stomach. A traditional Ugandan meal served for dinner will immerse you into the Ugandan culture from the start! This is a great opportunity for you to meet your fellow travellers who have arrived already and settle and last minute nerves over a nice, cold beer.

Meals Included: Dinner

Also known as ‘Kawolo’ by the locals, you will venture east to Lugazi, Buikwe District. Not a town on many people’s radar, be prepared to witness the real Uganda, far from the tourist path.

With a chance to learn about the background of the Lugacraft Community Development Organisation from the founder himself, you will be familiarised with the Lugacraft’s mission, which, in their own words, is “to facilitate access to a better life for disadvantaged youth, children and women through training them in life-changing skills.”

Those of you with green fingers can lend a hand in the women’s communal garden and the day will be topped off with the moment highly anticipated by all travellers; make sure you pack your dancing shoes ready for a traditional Ugandan dance class!

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

A short drive through the breathtaking views of Uganda, will take you to the stunning landscape of Kabembe, Mukono District. Here you will be greeted by the Balamu Community Outreach Program, where you will work alongside locals to help renovate the community and experience life in the village.

There is so much to be done, whether you are fixing up a broken-down spring well, or unleashing your inner Cristiano Ronaldo in a football game with the kids of the village, the people of Kabembe will be so excited to see you! Warning: The children of Kabembe are pros when it comes to football, so be prepared to be skilled.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

The hard work (and fun, obviously) continues through to today as you visit the Hopeline Organization in Mayindo, Buikwe District. Just a short 45 minute drive away from your hotel, you’ll try your hand at preparing a traditional Ugandan meal with the ladies of Mayindo.

After testing and tasting your dishes for lunch, it’s time for some arts and crafts! The ladies of Mayindo are famous for their unparalleled ability to create beautiful mats from carefully hand-weaving grass, and you’ll have the chance to give it a go yourself! Or, endeavour to create some beautiful Ugandan jewelry, which was originally made of animal bones; but don’t worry, we’ll be using beads!

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Finally, let your inner teacher free! Travelling into the jungle of the Buikwe District to the Christian Heritage Centre, you will be able to meet, connect and play with the children at this school.

A primary school that strives to ‘provide a high quality education to local children who might not otherwise be able to access such’, you will be able to spend time making arts and crafts with the children or having a kick around in the yard outside.

The children here will be so grateful and happy to see you, and delighted to become friends. The day will be kicked off with a talk from the Christian Heritage Centre’s founder, and you will witness a rousing performance from the school choir; one that will make you love the children of Uganda even more!

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

An early start will lead to a hike through the spectacular Mabira Forest. With breathtaking views, and an abundance of beautiful wildlife to spot, you’ll feel like an extra in ‘The Jungle Book’ as you trek through the exquisite scenery, just with less talking bears!

Top the day off by feeling the wind through your hair as you speed through the trees on an exhilarating zipline across the treetops; get ready for that sky-high selfie! An afternoon off allows you time to relax, reflect on your previous projects and finally catch that tan you’ve been trying to get since you arrived!

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Finally, a chance to grab those souvenirs to take home for your loved ones at Jinja's main street craft market! A peaceful afternoon can be spent visiting Lake Victoria, AKA. the source of the world-famous River Nile! For those of you who want to get a better look, there is an optional boat ride all the way into the mouth of Lake Victoria; the perfect place to get those photos for your scrapbook!

Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch

Spanning over 40,075 kilometres in total, you can tick visiting the equator off your bucket list as you spend a morning jumping across the equator line! Following this, you will be whisked across the country to Lake Mburo National Park, where you can enjoy a relaxing boat cruise along the shore of the Lake. Kick back, relax and grab some Instagram worthy photos; don’t forget our hashtag, #WeAreBamboo In the evening, the time has come for your first game drive. Despite the fact that Lake Mburo is only a small game park, it’s home to over 200 different species of animal. Think of it as a ‘Where’s Wally’ game with an array of animals to find, including hippos, impalas, hyenas and zebras.

Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch & Dinner

Track warthogs, topi, impalas, duikers, bushbucks, waterbucks, giraffes and zebras as you take on a 4-hour walking safari through Lake Mburo National Park! Remember your hiking boots! The afternoon can be spent relaxing and watching the wildlife pass by from the window of your lodge accommodation.

Alternatively, for those who would prefer a more action-packed evening, you can participate in a cycle through the National Park or pull out your binoculars and head off on another evening game drive!

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

After an early breakfast, we will spend the morning travelling to the Queen Elizabeth National Park! The Queen Elizabeth National Park’s diverse ecosystem of grassy plains, tropical forests, rivers, swamps, lakes, and volcanic craters is home to an incredible abundance of wildlife.

With a rare chance to possibly see elephants, leopards and bushbucks, you can spend the day observing the awesome treeclimbing lions that are native to the Queen Elizabeth National Park. Your evening will be spent driving into the sunset with your travel buddies on an evening game drive!

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

An early rise this morning equals a chance at an early morning game drive through the picturesque landscape of the Queen Elizabeth National Park. With zebras and giraffes galore, your memory snapshots will cause severe jealousy from friends and loved ones, and immense amounts of social media love.

The icing is added to the Bamboo cake with a boat ride down the Kazinga Channel! A popular watering hole among the wildlife folk, this boat cruise offers an excellent platform for photography (your pictures will look like they have been taken from the National Geographic itself). There’ll be an abundance of wildlife gathering just mere metres from you grabbing a quick refreshment to quench their thirst before being on their way.

To add to this, the Kazinga Channel is any avid bird-watchers dream come true, with various species of exquisite and colourful birdlife residing in the area.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

A long journey back to Entebbe marks the end of your adventure in paradise. For those feeling energised enough after the drive, there is plenty of time for one last dinner with your travel buddies to reminisce over your whole experience with a nice cocktail or beer and share stories of your adventure!

Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch

The moment every traveller dreads is finally upon us; it’s time to go home. After taking one final selfie and group photo, the time has come to wave goodbye to your travel buddies, and the friends that you’ve made in Uganda.

You are now a fully fledged member of the BamFam! Woohoo! But, as they say, “once bitten by the travel bug, one shall remain happily infected forever.”

1 - What isn't included?

In short - anything that’s not on the "What's included?" list in the info pack! The main things you’ll absolutely need to get that aren’t included are:

International flights - we have people join us from all over the world so we leave these flexible so you can choose the departure airport and airline that suits you best.

Travel Insurance - you can choose your own travel insurance, or we can organise this for you. You can find details on the travel insurance here and will be able to add this onto your booking when you pay your program fee.

Visas – depending on the passport you hold you may need to get a visa before you travel. Please see below for more info on visas.

2 - How should I book my flights?

You need to book a flight that lands into Entebbe International Airport (EBB) on the Sunday that the tour starts, before 3pm. Providing you arrive between these hours on this day, one of the team will then be there to meet you on arrival and take you back to the hotel. If you arrive later than 3pm on the Sunday start date, we will organise an airport pickup without a Bamboo representative to meet you.

If you arrive before your Sunday start date, you will need additional accommodation. We can book this for you, at your own expense and you will just need to make your own way there from the airport.

This tour will end on the Friday 12 days later in Entebbe, so you need to make your departure arrangements from there that day.

3 - Do I need a visa?

Depending on your country of citizenship you may be entitled to a 30-day visa-free entry into Uganda. A quick Google search will tell you whether you need a visa or not.

4 - How much spending money will I need?

This largely depends on you. Lots of breakfasts throughout the tour are included, along with a couple of lunches and dinners. The rest of the meals are up to you, and if you are having local meals it will cost a couple of dollars, if you prefer western food, it will be more depending on where you eat.

5 - Do I need vaccinations?

This depends on your home country and your vaccination history. You should visit a local travel clinic and see what they recommend.

6 - When does my deposit have to be put down?

There is no deadline for paying the US $250 deposit, but we cannot secure your place until we have received this. Places are limited, and this is one of our most popular tours, so we recommend you do this as soon as possible to be sure of a spot. Once we have received your deposit, we will send you a confirmation email. If you do not receive this within 48 hours, please check your junk/spam email folders and let us know if you cannot see it.

7 - What are the Payment options?

Your final balance is due 90 days before you travel. We will send you an email shortly after you have secured a spot offering you two options for payment. You can either pay the program fee in full (at any point before the date it is due), or you can set up weekly instalments to pay a small amount off regularly until it is paid in full. You can choose either of these with or without travel insurance. Any changes to your trip must be made more than 90 days before you travel.

8 - Is Uganda safe?

Like any country in the world, there will always be some dangers (even when in your home country!), and it is important to exercise common sense, particularly when in major cities and tourist destinations. However, Uganda is a very safe country to travel in and around. You’ll also be with our award-winning team throughout your stay and will be travelling with a group.

9 - What currency are your prices?

All of our prices are in USD. If you would like to see what this is in your local currency, you can use a conversion site such as which will give you the current exchange rate. Please bear in mind that the amount will be taken in USD when you pay and exchange rates will fluctuate.

10 - How can I be sure this is not a scam?

We have been operating for over 15 years, have sent over 25,000 travelers and have an experienced team with a wealth of knowledge and passion! But don’t just take our word for it - if you visit our website Verification Page, you can see our accreditation and recommendations for different worldwide organisations. You can also visit our Facebook page to see reviews from previous travellers and volunteers.
